Study Skills for Success

  1. Be proactive and assertive. Take care of work and problems today.
  2. Read all assignments before lecture.
  3. Participate actively during class. Sit in the front half of the room, listen attentively, ask questions, state ideas.
  4. Take notes while reading. Most importantly, write down questions and ideas for class discussion.
  5. Take notes of important points and ideas presented during class or laboratory. (Notes help you remember and understand key concepts and ideas).
  6. Review reading and class notes daily.
  7. Work all of the assigned problems and homework.
    NOTE: Completing homework:
    1. Helps learning,
    2. Indicates your mastery of the topic.

  8. Study with other students. Make sure everyone understands and works each problem.
  9. Your instructors are good resources. Be sure to bring questions, problems, or requests to their attention during office hours or by appointment. Help them help you to learn.
  10. Study at a well lit desk without distractions (i.e., no TV, no music). A realistic minimum study time is 2 hours/week for each credit hour.
